Barber Facts

Barber:                        (From Wikipedia)
A barber (from the Latin barba, "beard") is usually someone, most often male, whose occupation is to cut any type of hair, give shaves, and trim beards of men.
In previous times, barbers also performed surgery and dentistry. In more recent times, with the development of safety razors and the decreasing prevalence of beards, most barbers primarily cut hair.
Although many barbers may still deal with facial hair when requested, in American and Commonwealth culture most barbers specialize in cutting men's hair.
The place where a barber works is generally called a barbershop, or simply the "barber's"

pH Chart

Acid-Balance. This is the proper pH balance necessary for healthy hair, skin and nails. Alkalinity results in a harsh, dry condition. The cause of alkalinity can vary from weather or the wrong cosmetic preparation to an inner physical condition.

In this modern age it is not sufficient for the progressive barber-stylist to know only the practical part of their profession. He must know something about the structure of hair and certain basic knowledge relating to the areas of the head, neck and skin on which they practice.

A bit about Walt

In 1978 Walt Reed took the movie Mecca of Hollywood by storm. He quickly became an award winning stylist and the favorite barber of many movie and television stars. He was well known for teaching accomplished barbers the necessary skills to provide the high end ‘movie star treatment’.

In addition to training advanced barbering techniques he offered a detailed hair related scientific education to each of his students. All of his graduates were able to offer complete professional excellence with each consultation and cut.

In 1995 Walt moved to Spokane and started The Cut Above on Francis and Oak. At his in-house salon Walt shines a spotlight on the retro barber shop. “‘Where everything old is new again.”

Walt has earned the title of Master Barber/Educator. Spokane is lucky to have such a gifted artist at their disposal.

One of the oldest Professions

When you think of the world's ‘Oldest Professions’ most people immediately think of barbering. There is a good reason for this: men and women have had hair on their heads since the very beginning.

Archaeological studies indicate that some crude forms of facial and hair adornment were practiced among prehistoric people in the glacial age. There are in existence many relics, such as combs, cosmetics and razors. The latter made of tempered copper and bronze, which came from the tombs of Egypt. These relics, as well as many written records, revealed the nobility and priesthood had already become regular patrons for barber services 6,000 years ago. Today, barbering is still a thriving industry throughout the world.
